Student Organization Misconduct Process

Student Organizations are an integral part of campus life at the University of Connecticut. Student Activities is committed to the success of students and  organizations as a part of campus life. Members of student organization are expected to be good citizens and engage in responsible behaviors that reflect well on the UConn and their organization.  All organizations are expected to comply with all University policies, including The Student Code and Blueprints. A group or organization may be held responsible for the actions and behaviors of its members and guests. When an alleged incident occurs, it will be addressed by the following process:

To submit a referral or complaint: go here. When a report is received, the organization will be notified. Community Standards will begin to investigate to determined if the alleged incident is a potential violation of The Student Code.  In cases where it is determined that the safety and welfare of a student or students is at risk, an organization can be interim suspended until the completion of the process. A full investigation will occur if there is a potential violation. If there is no potential violation of The Student Code, there may be a violation of other University policies or a concern. Referral or Investigation reports will be sent to Student Activities. Staff from Student Activities will review the documentation and notify the organization. Student Organization Conduct Sanction Considerations

When choosing sanctions a variety of things are considered by the committee including but not limited to organizational conduct history, aggravating factors, context of incident, and nature of the incident. Sanctions may be imposed on an organization following the outcome of a formal organization conduct process for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). One or more of the below sanctions may be imposed upon an organization as a result of the organization conduct process.

 Type of Sanctions
 WarningLetter of Warning to organization, advisor and other parties as warranted  Resulting from a relatively minor violation of The Student Code or other published policies in which the organization has been found responsible for indirectly or unintentionally, and unknowingly creating or contributing to an atmosphere that was conducive to the violation’s occurrence.
 Probation StatusOrganization is monitored for a determined period of time during which the organization’s conduct history will be considered in the event of subsequent conduct incidents. Organization will need to demonstrate sustained organization change prior to removing a Probationary Status.  Resulting from repeated minor violations or other conduct issues determined to be the result of the organization indirectly or unintentionally, and unknowingly creating or contributing to an atmosphere that was conducive to the violation’s occurrence.
 Loss of Privileges Loss of privileges on campus; may include, but not be limited to, reserving meeting and event space, funding support, eligibility for the involvement fair, use of the Student Org Center facilities, suspension of banking and/or financial advisement support, and public listing with UConntact  Resulting from a violation of a more serious nature and determined to be the result of the organization directly or intentionally and knowingly creating or contributing to an atmosphere that was conducive to the violation’s occurrence.
 RestitutionRequirement to repay monetary costs associated with damages or loss of property. May also/instead take the form of work/service required to repair, replace, improve or otherwise restore or enhance property or persons impacted by the organization’s behavior.  Resulting from instances where the organization is determined to be responsible for creating or contributing to an atmosphere that results in behaviors and actions of its members or guests that result in property damage and/or loss.
Educational Initiatives – Requirement to participate in an educational initiative including but not limited to workshops, mediation, leadership development seminars, community service projects, etc. Committee will determine learning outcomes that are applicable. Multiple educational initiatives may be required. Resulting from instances where the organization is determined to be responsible for creating or contributing to an atmosphere where members/guests demonstrate a lack of understanding of or adherence to stated policies or basic standards of civil behavior and respect.
Suspension/Loss of Registration Disallowed from any affiliation with the University of Connecticut, direct or indirect. Prohibited to re-activate as an organization without prior written permission from the Department of Student Activities. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, and the Club Sports Office may also deny recognition to an organization by their offices during a suspension/loss of registration. Must apply for reinstatement. Resulting when it is determined that the organization has directly, knowingly and repeatedly created, contributed to (by action or inaction) an unhealthy culture that fosters behaviors and actions by its members determined to be in violation of basic standards of civil behavior and respect to individuals, entities and their property. Additionally may result from an organization failing to complete sanctions, or respond to requests to meet with the committee in response to previous violation issues.

 

Filing an Appeal

An organization may submit an appeal of the Ad-Hoc Committee’s decision. Appeals must be submitted within five business days of the date that the sanction letter is sent to the student leaders of the organization. This appeal deadline will be included in the sanction letter. An appeal may be made by completing an Appeals Form and submitting it to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. The decision of the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs will be final. The Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs will conclude the appeals process with a letter/email to the organization’s student leader.
