Step Five: Brainstorm Methods to Manage Risk

YES YOU CAN!

First we are going to develop some strategies you can apply to reduce the severity of the risk and probability that something will go wrong.

  • Have an advisor accompany your organization on the trip.
  • Carry communication devices and exchange phone numbers. This will allow you to stay in contact with one another, as well as be able to contact emergency personnel.
  • Go over travel route with all those traveling. Knowing the area you will be traveling in puts people at ease as well as makes it less likely you will get lost.
  • Develop and write down a plan in case of separation. Make sure to share the plan with the entire group.
  • Check weather forecast. When driving, knowing the conditions you will be driving in is important, and allows you to plan accordingly. Driving in rain or snow is much different than driving on a sunny day.
  • Make sure that more than one driver per vehicle is available to drive. This ensures that no one will get tired at the wheel. Make sure to rotate drivers!
  • Establish expectations that all will use seat belts.
  • Establish a NO texting/cell phone use while driving.
  • Establish a no alcohol policy.
  • Explore the possibility of hiring a driver or flying. Hiring an experienced trained driver or flying transfers the risk from your group to the company you hire, should an accident occur.
